Currently there are no official Parkour classes running in Aberdeen (though some of the guys here are aiming to get instructor qualifications eventually), sorry.

If you're looking for organised classes then something like gymnastics or martial arts classes will be good for building up strength, agility, balance and general body awareness and will really help with his Parkour, but otherwise the best thing to do in my opinion is to read a bit about Parkour yourself so that you can explain to him important safety aspects, and also you can find lots of good tutorials on individual parkour techniques on youtube.

Here's a good first video with some basic landing and rolling: [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

Some really important tips when landing are: don't bend your knees past 90 degrees (this makes sure you don't put too much strain on the knee joint), and try to land as quietly as possible. If your landing is quiet you know it's good as you've used your muscles to absorb the impact rather than just crashing to the ground. And if you're ever dropping from above head height (which I really wouldn't recommend doing without training for a year or two to strengthen up your muscles and joints etc) then always roll upon landing. If you can't roll safely, then don't jump off anything that big!

After that the first couple of beginner techniques that I think would be best to start with are the "speed vault" and "lazy vault" and "precision jump" - again there are good tutorials for all of these on YouTube. Getting into the habit of always warming up before doing any Parkour is a good idea too, ie doing a few minutes of jogging and moving your joints through their full range of motion.

I've only been doing Parkour for 4 months myself, but I found this book really helpful in my first month: [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

There are some really good free Parkour articles (some by the author of the above book) at Parkour Generations.com as well: [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register] .

Hope that helps!

I would recommend he tries to attend this national theatre event for a taste of Parkour. Unfortunately I only know that the workshops start this month and that they will be held at Transition Extreme by Chris Grant. He's a certified coach and will be here for the month.

Can anyone else that went to the first workshop help on information?
