Hannah,
As steven said you should start doing some small precision jumps. This is a two footed jump normally done from one wall to another. However you can just as easily practice this by putting a couple of markers on the floor - piece of string? Really focus on getting a soft controlled landing, land on your toes, and bend your knees as you land to absord the impact
Another thing you can practice is balancing on things - rails, walls, even just walk along the kerb on the pavement. This will help develop the control that will allow you to preform more advanced things faster.
The next thing you want to do is start to get a feel for the 'cat' position
It will be easier to hold with almost straight arms , pushing with your legs.
The final thing is a basic vault - for some reason I can't find a video showing it. I would call it a step vault - basically a speed vault but tapping your outside foot on the object. Maybe someone else who see's this will know another name for it. If no one can tell me another name for it then I'll try and describe what I mean better.

That should give you plenty to get started on, then when you come out we can help you improve on them as well as teaching you some new things.
On a totally unrelated note where abouts are you from originally? - sounded like your mum lives a wee bit outside aberdeen.
